This music festival documentary was filmed and directed by music journalist, Stephan Boissonneault. His first introduction into the Quebec/Eastern Canada music scene after the pandemic was at FME 2021, where he immediately fell in love with the "emerging" artists focus of the festival, as well as the dedication from the programmers, founders, and volunteers.
"I wanted to give something back while also documenting the 20-year anniversary in 2022," Stephan says. "But as I got more and more footage and interviews, I realized it was going to be a bigger piece, and it eventually turned into my first feature documentary. "
On top of filming the documentary (with the help of his friend, photographer Sean Carmichael) Stephan approached the editing process in a DIY fashion, learning how to edit on the fly while he watched countless music documentaries to learn his specific style. He also sought out the help of his friend, Andrew Brown (an accomplished sound editor from Toronto) for the sounds of the documentary.
The Montreal debut of It Could Only Happen Here will take place on Sept 23 at Cinema Public. After that, Stephan plans on pitching the film to various festivals around the world.
